Totally Radical Muslims launched its second volume — a Zine containing poetry, art and personal stories about resistance to oppression.
This group of Oakland-based Muslims started the Zine to confront, share, name and re-imagine experiences of Islamophobia. This issue was inspired by the traditions of Muharram and the stories of Karbala which exemplify social justice; resistance to oppression; courage to change and strong sense of solidarity.
ASATA was a proud sponsor of the production of this Zine and we were happy to see so many of our AACRE and AMEMSA coalition partners attend the launch event on September 19th which took place at the Islamic Cultural and Community Center of Northern California.
The awesome and funny Zahra Noorbhaksh was MC for the evening which began with a welcome from Shenaaz Janmohamed followed by an amazing musical performance by Naima Shalhoub.
Several contributors to the Zine read selected pieces.
Two short films were screened including “Revolution Syria” by Weyam Ghabian. After the program concluded, everyone helped themselves to delicious halal food and picked up copies of the newly printed zines. New friendships were made as the Totally Radical Muslims community continues to grow. We all look forward to the next issue.
